My morning meditation was gently interrupted as the door to my bedroom slowly opened. The ruffled blond curls of a young boy holding a very large furry toy appeared around the door. As he looked up and saw me in my bed his face lit up and he smiled at me. In turn my heart began to sing. It is just over 6 weeks since I moved in with Leo, his sister Lilli and his Dad, my ex Husband, Alf, yet in my absence for the last two days, to attend a family funeral, I had clearly been missed. It was an incredibly touching moment. Leo jumped into my bed and for the next 15 minutes excitedly shared his news from the last 2 days.
I am often amazed at how life can offer you miracles when you least expect them. As you may know I was not able to have children of my own but I have worked with children for nearly 30 years and in the last 4 years have been living my dream of helping to create Happy Families. Now life has rewarded me with the greatest gifts. The gift of being able to care for and nurture 2 young souls, even if that is only every other week, and the gift of being able to experience the joy of feeling unconditional love from a small child.
As the warm feeling in my heart grew so hot it almost burned I wondered if I will always be able to appreciate these precious moments. Maya Angelou said ” When you have an attitude of gratitude you wake up saying Thank You“. I know that is true through personal experience and through the experiences of the parents and children who I have introduced to a Gratitude Journal. And when you are grateful for what you have, you feel happier and, as I am experiencing, life seems to send you more to be grateful for.
If you do not have a Gratitude Journal I encourage you to start one. Buy a beautiful journal that you will enjoy writing in. Then each night before you go to bed write down 3 or more things that you are grateful for that day. It can be anything from seeing a beautiful rainbow, to enjoying a family meal, or as will be in my journal tonight a precious moment with a child. Here is my list from last night
- I am grateful for being able to spend some precious time with friends I have not seen for a long time.
- I am grateful that Lilli looked after my cat Minstrel while I was away.
- I am grateful that I was able to drive safely back from Cheshire even though the weather was awful.
- I am grateful to have a loving family to come home to
- I am grateful for my guardian angels and guides
What are you grateful for today? An act of kindness? A beautiful view? A new toy? I would love to hear what has made you feel happy today.
And if you are new to gratitude journals please do let me know what affect keeping a gratitude journal has on your life.
