Are you struggling to achieve that perfect Work/Life Balance?
Do you believe that if you could just get the Balance right life would be so much easier? And then may be, just may be, you wouldn’t feel so guilty about not being with your children when you are at work and nor would you feel guilty about the work you are not doing when you are with your children. After all other women seem to find Balance, right? Actually no, not right if Sharon Lechter, the lady who has adapted Napolean Hills ‘Think and Grow Rich’ for women is to be believed.
Yesterday I laughed as I heard a surprising comment from Sharon Lechter . She suggested that “Constantly trying to find Balance in our lives is adding to the guilt trip of being a working Mum!! Far from the peaceful, happy life we imagine Balance to bring Sharon suggests that striving for Balance makes us feel even more guilty! Why? Because we never achieve it!!
There are two definitions of Balance and Sharon Lechter was referring to the physical definition of being still. As she points out life is never still it is always moving forwards and therefore she questions why we would look for balance. There is however a second definition which says balance is a situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions. This seems more appropriate when we are looking for Balance in our lives but there is no one formula to decide how much time we choose to give to each area of our lives. It is a purely personal choice and in truth what is right for you may not be right for me and also it may be right for you today but it may need to be changed for next week.
So how would you feel if I dared to suggest that….. you do not have to find Balance? … you are not any less of a great Mum because you do not have your life all Balanced? ….you may be better trying to be a great juggler than a balanced gymnast? If right now you are feeling a sense of relief then searching for Balance is clearly causing you extra stress not less stress. And it is perfectly ok to let yourself off the perfectionist hook. As Oprah Winfrey said “Women can have it all, just not all at once!”
Balance for me is about letting go of guilt and finding time, time to spend with my family and friends, time for meditation, time to enjoy walking my dogs or being with my horses, time for singing and yes time for my business. Balance is about my schedule but I have the power to change and adapt that schedule at any time. Balance is not about a goal I may one day achieve, Balance is about my freedom to live the life I choose.
What does Balance mean to you?
